At Safe Inc., many young people who come through our doors carry heavy burdens – pregnancy at a young age, unstable housing, difficult relationships, health concerns, and the daily stress of simply surviving.
Some arrive after cycling in and out of homelessness, others come seeking safety from abuse. Many struggle with basic needs like a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, clean clothes, or a ride to school. Each story is unique, but they share resilience and the courage to ask for help.

Today, many of the young people who have come through our doors are building stable lives, caring for their health, securing safe housing, and creating homes filled with love and possibility.

November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month
This month, and every month, we recognize the challenges faced by young people without stable housing and raise awareness of the crisis in our own communities.
Right here in Schenectady, the crisis is urgent. During the 2023–24 school year, the Schenectady City School District identified more than 700 students as housing-insecure—approximately 1 in 12 students, one of the highest rates in New York State.
Did You Know?
- 152 youth under 25 were identified as homeless on a single night in January 2025. (HUD Point-in-Time Count)
- More than 2,600 students experienced homelessness during the 2023–24 school year across Capital Region school districts. (NYSED McKinney-Vento)
- Youth avoid adult shelters = many remain “hidden homeless” by couch-surfing, doubling up with friends, or hiding out in public.
- Nearly half of homeless youth in New York were unsheltered – living in cars, parks, or other places not meant for housing.

Your end-of-year donation will directly impact at-risk youth by funding the McIntosh House (our emergency shelter) and Project Safe (street outreach, life skills, and anti-trafficking). In 2025 to date, well over 500 individuals have received supportive services necessary to give them a safer tomorrow.
