McIntosh House - Runaway and Homeless Youth Shelter in Schenectady

The Delores Edmonds McIntosh House, previously known as ‘Safe House,’ is the only certified emergency youth shelter in Schenectady County. Named after the woman who led Safe Inc. for a quarter of a century, the McIntosh House seeks to carry on the legacy of Delores Edmonds McIntosh by offering a safe haven to youth in need.

The McIntosh House serves youth under the age of 18 that are runaways, homeless, and/or sexually exploited. We can also provide shelter services to parents younger than 18 and their infant or toddler.

McIntosh House

The McIntosh House is certified by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) to provide residential services for 12 youth. In addition, we provide services for 14- and 15-year-olds in special circumstances, space permitting. In 2023, 120 youth stayed at the McIntosh House.

Admission to the McIntosh House is solely voluntary. A youth may come to the McIntosh House through a self-referral or from other referral sources. During the youth’s stay, staff help the youth to find a more suitable long-term housing opportunity.
